Training the Trainers

In an ideal world, local workers and service users should be involved in providing briefings and training to local tier 1 and 2 services. They know the services, and they know many of the needs of local service users.

But there's often not the capacity in local areas for drug and alcohol professionals and service users to provide training. They usually know their stuff regarding drugs and working one-to-one, but often haven't got the confidence to stand up in front of a group and train or facilitate people. Sounds familiar? Speaking in front of groups (or public speaking) is routinely cited as one of people's worst fears, with some surveys ranking it above death and divorce.

One of the courses drugsandstuff.co.uk provides intends to build the ability of the local drug and alcohol field to respond to training requests.

Normally £600 per day for the training. Now £300 per day (plus travel, and subsistence as needed).

An example training-the-trainer course outline is given below (all our courses are designed to meet local needs, so each course is slightly different).

Duration

The course would last for four days. In some circumstances a three day course would be possible.

Who the course is for

The course can be offered as a drug related training the trainers, a sexual health related training the trainers, or a generic training-the-trainers.

This is a four day course aimed at those who need to facilitate the occasional training session or work with a group. It would be of particular benefit to those delivering drug education and drug prevention training to both clients and other professionals. Participants have been from a range of NHS, social services and voluntary sector backgrounds, mostly working in drug/alcohol services. During the course participants will be expected to plan and deliver a short training/learning session. Prior knowledge of drug and alcohol issues is required (or sexual health issues such as chlamydia if a sexual health training-the-trainers is commissioned).

Aim

To enable participants to gain a wider understanding of the theory and practice of training within a drug education and prevention context.

This training is intended to build the capacity of the local drug and alcohol field to respond to training requests. This would be, over a medium term period, to develop a pool of workers able and confident to work in a range of settings.

Training outcomes

By the end of the course participants will:
