Who the course is for
This is a three or four day course aimed at those who need to facilitate the occasional training session or work with a group. It would be of particular benefit to those delivering drug education and drug prevention training to both clients and other professionals. Participants have been from a range of NHS, social services and voluntary sector backgrounds, mostly working in drug/alcohol services. During the course participants will be expected to plan and deliver a short training/learning session. Prior knowledge of drug and alcohol issues is required.
Aim
- To enable participants to gain a wider understanding of the theory and practice of training within a drug education and prevention context.
- This training is intended to build the capacity of the local drug and alcohol field to respond to training requests. This would be, over a medium term period, to develop a pool of workers able and confident to work in a range of settings.
Training outcomes
By the end of the course participants will:
- Be able to apply the basic principles of the training cycle: needs assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation.
- Have gained an increased understanding of learning styles.
- Be able to devise appropriate aims and objectives for a learning/training event.
- Have explored appropriate methods and resources to support individual and group learning.
- Have explored the key theories relevant to health promotion / drug education training.
- Know the essentials of managing potential difficulties in groups.
- Be able to relate anti-discriminatory practice to their training interventions.
- Have an opportunity to do a presentation and receive feedback.
- Critically reflect on their own practice and identify areas for development.
The course will include:
- Theories of learning.
- Training techniques and presentation skills.
- Key components for designing drug and alcohol training events.
- Creating a learning environment.
- Workplace specific exercises.
