Who the course is for
This one-day course is for workers with little or no previous drugs training. It provides a good grounding for understanding key issues and concepts.
This course has previously been delivered to multi-agency groups. It has also been delivered to staff in specialist areas, e.g. Connexions staff, licensees, pharmacists, and adult residential services.
Aim
To enable participants to manage effectively the issues which drug use introduces into their agencies/lives.
Training outcomes
By the end of the course participants will:
- Able to name drugs most commonly used, their effects and methods of use.
- More aware of the different levels of harm for the user / their family, associated with different patterns of drug /alcohol use.
- More aware of multi agency interventions with young people or parents who use drugs / alcohol.
- Aware of local drug and alcohol services and how to refer to them.
- Aware of the links between drug/alcohol use and their client group, e.g. links between homelessness and drug use, links between child protection and drug use, links between community safety and drug use, links between sexual health and drug use.
The course will include:
- Indicators of use, and their limitations of the use of such indicators.
- Dealing with sharps.
Handouts
The Drug File (approximately 60 page handout) will be offered to the course purchaser. Additional literature would be included by arrangement. Local service information would be requested from the local Drug and Alcohol Action Team/local service providers.
